Best time to Visit Tanzania

The best wildlife viewing months in Tanzania are during the Dry season from late June to October. The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July and the time to see the wildebeest calving is late January to February. The southern and western circuit parks are best visited during the Dry season (June to October).

Best Time : June to October ((Little to no rainfall)), June-July and January-February (Serengeti for the wildebeest migration and calving)

High Season : July to March (northern circuit parks; they get crowded), July to October (southern and western circuit parks; they don't really get crowded any time of the year)

Low Season: April and May (northern circuit parks still get quite a few visitors unlike the southern and western circuit parks, where many lodges close down)

Worst Weather: March and April (Peak of Wet season)

A safari in Tanzania reveals the world's premier safari destination: the Serengeti, and its expansive plains, the largest un-flooded, and un-broken caldera in the world, the Great Wildebeest Migration, and the towering Mount Kilimanjaro. Enjoy lunch next to a hippo filled watering hole, spot the legendary tree-climbing lion, and watch as massive tusked elephants amble about the Serengeti on a once in a lifetime safari.Tanzania offers travelers the opportunity to experience firsthand the Maasai culture, amazing animal viewing, and epic ascents up Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's largest free standing mountain and you are in for a truly magical African adventure. • Tanzania is home to Africa's tallest mountain - Mt. Kilimanjaro at an altitude of 19,341 feet above sea level.
  • There are more than 120 ethnic groups in Tanzania.
  • Tanzania exports gold, cashews, cotton, and coffee.
  • Tourism is a major source of revenue for Tanzania.
  • About 80% of the population lives by subsistence farming or fishing.
  • Tanzania is home to the Serengeti National Park, where massive herds of wildebeest and zebra can be spotted.
  • The largest crab in the world - the coconut crab - calls Zanzibar, Tanzania its home.
  • FUN FACT: Did you know? Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was born in Stone Town, Tanzania!

Northern Tanzania is expensive (comparatively to the south) but offers unrivalled wildlife viewing and is completely iconic. Most itineraries begin with an overnight in Arusha before heading off on your safari adventure. Starting in the very north, The Serengeti (which borders the Masai Mara in Kenya) is undeniably world-class and home to The Great Wildebeest Migration as well as the biggest concentration of predators on the planet. The Ngorongoro Crater has a huge amount of the big 5 in a unique and dramatic setting. Surrounding the crater, the Ngorongoro Highlands is home to colourful Masai culture and rolling coffee farms. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans to the border of the Serengeti and is fantastic in February time when the Wildebeest Migration is calving. Tarangire National Park is also another option in the north with night drives, fantastic views and a colossal number of elephants. Although Tarangire is a fantastic park, it is more of an "add-on" to the main northern circuit of the crater and Serengeti. Lake Manyara is another smaller park with flamingos, fantastic land-birdlife and some truly beautiful spots for safari. However, Lake Manyara is small and can be seen in an afternoon rather than as the main focus of a trip.

A guide to South & West Tanzania

The South of Tanzania offers better value accommodation than the north, a less touristy experience but is not a classic ‘big 5 safari destination’. Starting south east of Tanzania, the Selous Game Reserve is a huge dry season park offering boating, walking safaris and fly-camping with excellent wild dogs. Ruaha National Park is a beautiful red-earth park where you can also enjoy walking, fly-camping, super prides of lions and huge buffalo herds. Ruaha is home to 10% of the whole world’s lions, so to say the wildlife here is not as prominent as in the north could be a mistake! The west comprises of Katavi and Mahale which are expensive to get to, but because of their relative inaccessibility offer a simply magical experience alone in the wilderness, where you can trek chimps in the Mahale Mountains and see some of Tanzania’s most dramatic safari scenes in the depths of Katavi’s harsh dry season.

Only a few countries are exempt from obtaining a visa to visit Tanzania. The majority of foreign visitors, including Indian citizens, are required to get a visa for Tanzania to travel to the country. However, there’s a simple way to travel to Tanzania thanks to their eVisa system.

The online Tanzania visa for Indian travelers was launched on November 26th, 2018. Through an online application, Indian nationals can easily obtain their visa to travel to the country. The eVisa for Tanzania was introduced with the aim of improving security and expediting the visa process at border control and immigration.

Indian citizens can also get a Tanzania visa on arrival when entering the country, although this can involve long queues at the border. Besides the extensive wait, it is necessary to to pay a fee, the cost of which is not set and can vary. The new and efficient electronic Tanzania visa system is expected to boost tourism and contribute to border control.

What Documents Do I Need for the Tanzania eVisa for Indians?

To be able to apply online before traveling to Tanzania, Indian travelers must meet some Tanzania visa requirements and ensure they have the necessary documents. Indian citizens are required to have:

  • An Indian passport valid for at least 6 months upon arrival in Tanzania
  • A scanned copy of the passport information page
  • A digital passport-style photo
  • Vaccinations recommended for Tanzania (if the traveler has recently visited any country in the yellow fever zone of Sub-Saharan African and tropical South America)
  • Indian travelers must have a return ticket to India or to an onward destination when entering Tanzania. If the traveler is not able to provide proof of the intended departure can result in the traveler being refused entry to the country.

A single-entry tourist visa for Tanzania, which allows the traveler a 3-month consecutive stay in the country for a holiday, short term health treatment or other activities sanctioned by the Law of the United Republic of Tanzania

Visit to Tanzania eVisa Application Website

After ensuring that they meet the Tanzania visa requirements for Indian citizens and choosing the adequate visa type, Indian nationals can fill out the Tanzania eVisa application online. The application form takes only a few minutes to complete.

Indian travelers must provide some personal and passport information, including their full name, date and place of birth, and travel document number, as well as the applicant’s travel plans for Tanzania. Travelers are advised to double-check that all the information entered is correct in order to avoid any delays in receiving the visa.

Applicants are required to pay the Tanzanian visa for Indian citizens fee before submitting the form. It is necessary to provide a current email address to which a confirmation that the application has been received will be sent. Once the application has been processed by Tanzanian immigration officials, final approval or denial of the eVisa will also be sent to this address.

Indian travelers should keep in mind that even if their Tanzania eVisa has been approved, it doesn’t guarantee permission to enter Tanzania and the final decision is made by the immigration official at border entry points. All travelers should make sure that they have all the required supporting documentation when they pass through Tanzania’s immigration control.

Please read the guidelines carefully before raising the request.
