Tadoba National Park - The Real Land of Tigers is Maharashtra's oldest and largest tiger reserve,

Also known as the "Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve" is one of India's 47 project tiger reserves existing in India. It lies in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra state and is approximately 150 km from Nagpur city. The total area of the tiger reserve is 1,727 Sq.km, which includes the Tadoba National Park, created in the year 1955. The Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was formed in the year 1986 and was amalgamated with the park in 1995 to establish the present Tadoba Andheri Tiger Reserve. The word 'Tadoba' is derived from the name of God "Tadoba" or "Taru," which is praised by local tribal people of this region and "Andhari" is derived from the name of Andhari river that flows in this area.

The Tadoba National Park is divided into three separate forest ranges, i.e. Tadoba north range, Kolsa south range, and Morhurli range, which is sandwiched in between the first two. There are two lakes and one river in the park, which gets filled every monsoon, the ‘Tadoba Lake,’ ‘Kolsa Lake,’ and ‘Tadoba River.’ These lakes and rivers provide vital ingredients needed to sustain the park’s life.


According to the 2010 National Census on Tigers, there are about 43 tigers in the reserve, which is one of the highest in India. Here are some highlights of the park…

The park is open for visitors from 15th October to 30th June every season and remains full-day closed on every Tuesday.

The vegetation of Tadoba forest is of Southern tropical dry deciduous type and is spread on around 626 sq.km. Teak is the prominent tree species in the forest and there are a few lakes, which makes sure the park has rich water resources.

Major part of this forest lies in the hilly area, thus many hillocks and terrains provide shelter to the wild animals here.

It has a dense forest area, smooth meadows, deep valleys, and a great atmosphere to stabilize more numbers of tigers.

The main attraction of the Tadoba National Park is Jungle or Tiger Safari in an open top gypsy.

There is good chance to spot the shy Sloth Bear and Wild Dogs.

One can find some of the Central India’s best native woodland bird species in this forest.

Accommodation facilities are available and are mainly concentrated among two of its popular entrance gates i.e. Kolara Gate and Mohurli Gate.

The forest of Tadoba is a dry deciduous forest. Majorly constituting of Teak and Bamboo, other floral species like Tendu, Kosum, Mahua, Palas, Ber etc

TATR forms an excellent tiger habitat. But other than this big cat Tadoba is home to another elusive cats i.e Leopards, Jungle cats, Rusty spotted cat and leopard cat. Other carnivores include Wild dogs, Jackals, Hyena, wolves and fox. Deers are found in abundance, sub species being spotted Deers, Sambar deer, barking deer. Nilgai and Chinkara are the antelope species found here. Other than these mammals Gaur, Wild boars, Langurs, Rhesus Macaques are seen. Another famous mammal the Sloth bear is frequently sighted here.

adoba has rich bird life with numerous resident and migratory bird species. Around 195 species of birds are found here. The lakes and river in and around Tadoba are home to various water birds. Some common birds like Indian peafowl, Drongos, Green bee-eaters, Lesser golden woodpecker, Indian pitta, Barbet and so on. Raptors like the Crested Serpent Eagle, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Grey headed fish eagle are also sighted.

As of August 2016, there are 88 tigers in the reserve, and 58 in the forests immediately outside the reserve.

Apart from the Bengal tiger, Tadoba Tiger Reserve is home to other mammals, including: Indian leopards,[6] sloth bears, gaur, nilgai, dhole, striped hyena, small Indian civet, jungle cats, sambar, barking deer, chital, chausingha and honey badger. Tadoba lake sustains the marsh crocodile, which was once common all over Maharashtra.

Reptiles here include the endangered Indian python and the common Indian monitor. Terrapins, Indian star tortoise, Indian cobra and Russel's viper also live in Tadoba.

The lake contains a wide variety of water birds, and raptors. 195 species of birds have been recorded, including three endangered species. The grey-headed fish eagle, the crested serpent eagle, and the changeable hawk-eagle are some of the raptors seen in the park. Other bird species found in the reserve include the orange-headed thrush, Indian pitta, crested treeswift, stone curlew, crested honey buzzard, paradise flycatcher, bronze-winged jacana, lesser goldenbacked woodpecker, various warblers, black-naped blue flycatcher and the Indian peafowl.

74 species of butterflies have been recorded including pansies, monarchs, mormons and swordtails.

A black panther was spotted in May 2018. As per the officials, it is a rare sight since black panthers normally live in evergreen forests and not in dry deciduous forests like Tadoba Tiger Reserve.

March to May is the best time to see tiger as summer temperatures are extremely high especially in the month of May. The monsoon begins from June to September and Vegetation and insect life come alive with the arrival of monsoon in mid June. The post monsoon starts from October to November, which is also the best time to visit Tadoba Wildlife Sanctuary as you will feel refreshing viewing the lush green jungle sprawled with flowers. Winter season begins from December to February, though temperature remains quite warm during these months due to the tropical climate.

Jungle Safari

The Jeep safari in Tadoba Tiger Reserve will give opportunity to explore the rich wildlife of the park and spot the animals like tiger, leopard, wild dogs, sloth bear, etc. There are three zones in the reserve that gives access to the Jeep Safari, namely Moharli (Mohurli) Zone, Tadoba Zone, and Kolsa Zone. By RoadNearest bus stop is Chandrapur and Chimur (32 km), but bus or cabs are also available from Chandrapur to Mohrali Village.

Weather in Tadoba

Winters stretch from November to February and day temperatures is between 25°-30°C and the park is looks green. Summers are too hot in Tadoba as the temperature increases to 47°C; even so it is the ideal time to sight mammals near water lakes as the vegetation is also rare, increasing visibility. The monsoon breaks in June with heavy rainfall of approx.1275 mm. and humidity is around 66%.
